The election of Pope Francis was the first time in the history of the Church that a Jesuit Priest was made Pontiff, and was the first time that a devout socialist and Marxist had ever occupied the most revered office in Christendom. Most devout Catholics saw a very real conflict between the teachings of collectivists and the tenets of personal responsibility.
